Ephemeral
‘Raw’ and ‘Elation’ are abstracted portrayals of our feelings as experienced in nature. They show us the ephemeral essence of our thoughts and emotions as they pass and dance around the ancient rock and trees when we walk amongst them. The existentialist realization of our smallness against the stability of the hard wisdom held by the natural formations is shown here through layering of mixed media. The textural connection between us and the natural environment can be felt by the seams of the embroidery and the build up of paint and charcoal.

Joy Never Visits Alone
When painting, I was thinking about the human capacity to hold a whole range of conflicting emotions at any one time. We rarely feel a single feeling alone, although those moments are to be cherished when they happen; there seems to be a certain purity about them. But more often than not, the richness of our emotional broth comes from the complex mix. I once heard that the ability to hold two contradicting beliefs at once is literally what it means to be human. I like that.
